A photo of the B33 cantilever chair by Marcel Breuer in an ivory white (Various Objects)
As many of you know, I sort of have a thing for furniture. While I’m not a design expert, I am a Taurus which means that it’s natural for me to be attracted to objects that meet at the intersection of beauty and comfort. (Haters will call it materialistic, I call it having good taste!) I think that this lingering interest in decor can also probably be traced back to my early childhood when I would waste hours of my life rearranging miniature furniture in all of my dollhouses—expect more on this in a future editorial, but I have so much to say about the various interiors that I once curated for my own amusement.
But back to furniture… I’ve been obsessed with Marcel Breuer’s chairs since I first laid eyes on them a few years ago. I randomly explored the grounds of Bauhaus Dessau before knowing anything about that iconic era, but it’s had such a huge impact on me since being there in person. Last month, a mindless scroll led me to a picture of a cantilever chair with a leather corset, and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it. I’m so obsessed that sometimes I catch myself genuinely considering dropping hundreds of dollars on one because it just looks so SEXY. (Don't tempt me with a good time when the big direct deposits eventually hit!) If someone asked me to pick a chair to describe exactly who I am, this would 100% be it.
One of my favorite pastimes now is exchanging pictures of furniture with friends and making remarks like “hot” with the hot face or woozy face emoji. There’s something oddly satisfying about objectifying… objects. Whenever this happens, I can hear “The Curse Of Curves” softly playing in the background of my empty head. But perhaps that’s just a side effect of living in isolation?
I’m still not entirely sure what I’m going to do with @spoiledg00ds, but it’s fun to have a space dedicated to sharing what I like and leaving it at that! The account has become this peaceful corner of the grid where I can leisurely look at stuff without worrying about what other people are saying or doing. If anyone reading this happens to have a good plug for these Jutta + Herbert Ohl chairs, I’m listening!
At the moment, I’m finding different ways to write more in-depth about this stuff, starting with a story that was recently published by The New York Times about modern cat furniture. (You can even read it in PRINT if you pick up today’s paper!) ICYMI, I also interviewed the founder of Hood Century for Vogue. There’s so much work in progress that I can’t wait for y’all to see and when I have the capacity, I’ll be sure to dump the runoff thoughts here ;-)
